PETER BAUHUIS

FLIES

MAY 11 – JUNE 19, 2021

Inspired by an 18th century drawing, German metal artist Peter Bauhuis has created brooches in silver, gold, copper and bronze that appear like a whole swarm of flies.

Everywhere people live, there are also flies. Flies that spread bacteria, that irritate, buzz and yet never cease to fascinate. Humankind’s relationship with flies has always been ambivalent. In European baroque painting as well as in Japanese art, the fly is a symbol of transience. But flies also have a reputation for being sweet-toothed and persistent, brave but stupid, incorrigible, passionate and intrusive.

In connection with the exhibition, Peter Bauhuis has also produced a book detailing his thoughts on the fly in art and in real life.

Peter Bauhuis’ swarm of flies has landed in galleries all over the world. Variations of the exhibition “Flies” are also shown in Galerie Biro in Munich; Gallery Loupe in Montclair, New Jersey; Friends of Carlotta in Zürich; The National in Christchurch; Gallery Funaki in Melbourne; ATTA Gallery in Bangkok; Galerie Noel Guyomarch in Montreal; Galeri SO, Solothurn in Switzerland.
