Åke Axelsson is of Sweden´s most well-known Interior Architect since the 1960s. At the same time, he is a Cabinet maker and Designer, also appreciated for his chairs both in public environments and private homes. He calls himself a functionalist, not in style, but in his pursuit of function for a better life.
Åke Axelsson, born 1932, lives and works in Engarn, Waxholm. Educated at Visby City’s Workshop School for furniture carpentry 1947–51, internship at a carpentry workshop in Munich, and in Östervåla 1951-52, Konstfack Univerity, department of furniture and interior design 1952-57. Employed by architect SAR Gösta Åberg 1957-59, architect SAR Professor Peter Celsing 1959-61, ran architectural office together with Erik Karlström 1961-1967, has his own architectural office and carpentry workshop since 1967 – 2024. Started and ran Galleri Stolen 1987-2003, co-owner of the family business Gärsnäs AB since 2003. Represented at Nationalmuseum, Stockholm. Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, recipient of the Prins Eugen medal, the Bruno Mathsson prize, awarded the Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s Major Stipend, awarded the title of Professor by the government and Appointed Honorary Doctor of Science byt Linköping University.
The armchair with accompanying footstool is made in a limited edition of thirty copies. The comfortable and sleek piece of furniture is made of black-painted birch veneer, assisted by Carpenter Daniel Ericsson.
"Svarta Damen" has a leather seat in vegetable tanned leather from Tärnsjö and a generous upholstery in sheepskin from Gotland by Master upholsterer Helena Engström.
Limited edition of 30 copies. Each lounge chair is marked with Åke Axelsson´s signature and the number of the edition 1/30.
