ANDERS OLSSON
CONICAL
FEBRUARY 1 – 22, 2014
Geometrical shapes have been a recurring motif throughout Swedish silversmith Anders Olsson’s career. In the exhibition Conical at Galleri Sebastian Schildt, Olsson allows the shape of the cone to take center stage. Perhaps the cone is more common in jewellery than in the context of furniture, and his furniture is what is most surprising about the exhibition – because how often does a silversmith also create furniture?
With the cone as a creative starting point, Olsson forms both tables and benches of varying sizes as well as art jewellery and suspended candle holders. His materials are stone and metals such as silver, iron, copper and brass.
Anders Olsson gets his ideas from everyday life in the city of Stockholm. He enjoys taking an existing product and looking at it from a different perspective to try and find a new feature or function for it. But in the end, the aesthetic of the form will always precede the function of the object.
It is not surprising that Olsson fills his days with two disparate professions that he is equally invested in and passionate about – silversmithing and hairdressing. Oftentimes. one profession inspires new ideas in another. Cutting a particular hairstyle can e.g. create a vision of what kind of jewellery that would complete the look, and vice versa. They are two professions that go hand in hand for him and his creative process is always ongoing.
